Gravy Studio & Gallery is proud to present Paper Studies, Debra Bilow’s first solo exhibition in Philadelphia. Paper Studies, focuses on Debra’s interest in still life compositions. This series of still lifes are nuanced color or black and white images that play with perception, expressing her minimalist leanings and are grounded in formality and restraint. The images are of white folded paper, placed within a white setting and photographed in natural light. The limited color palette causes the forms to fade into the background.  The planes flatten and merge and the delicate objects are barely there. Each image is printed on a small scale to enhance their understated, quiet nature. The size promotes an intimate, individual viewing of the photograph.

Debra Bilow (1955, American) photographs still life compositions, buildings, and landscapes. Debra grew up at the edge of rural life in Upstate New York.  She holds a Master’s Degree in Urban Planning from Rutgers University and subsequently pursued a career in real estate. Her photographs have been exhibited across the east coast of the US. Her images have been published in The Photo Review and the Light Journal and acquired by private collectors. She lives and works in Brooklyn and South Salem, New York.

Gravy Studio & Gallery is a collaborative photography workspace and gallery located on 2nd Street in Northern Liberties. Our goal is to serve as a multi-functional space that promotes the work of local photographers. Opening receptions are held on the First Friday of every month.
